for when there's something wrong with the engine? And let's face it, something *will* be wrong with the engine: the cars with this fake engine sound shit aren't Hondas and Toyotas.

A dubstep track for when there's a misfire. Heavy metal for a knock. Nelly for overheating.

An excellent question. In 30 years when I finally acquire one of those cars for some crapcan race, will the track sound like it needs a valve job?

Many newer BMW's like the F10 M5 play fake engine noise thru the speakers. It's supposed to simulate the engine throughout the rev range, and the sound is amped up even more in sport mode. Some VW's also have this, but VW has its own dedicated speaker for playing the engine sound that isn't shared with the radio. (Note that the Mustang does NOT play fake engine noise; in that case, Ford simply rerouted the exhaust, so the Mustang has REAL engine noise)

So my question is does that fake engine noise played thru the radio (called Active Sound Design by BMW) also simulate *problems* like when something is wrong with the engine.

I hope this helps :)

For the record id like to point out that jaguar also has a system for amplifying the REAL sound
